14th International CHIME Conference
Musical Instruments Museum, Brussels
18-22 November 2008
What are the future prospects for numerous musical genres (and instruments and stylistical traits) from China and East Asia’s past ? This theme will be explored at the 14th international conference of the European Foundation for Chinese Music Research (CHIME), to be hosted by the Musical Instruments Museum in Brussels (MIM) from 18 to 22 November 2009. The conference is a scholarly meeting, open to anyone interested in Chinese and East Asian music.
Issues like protection laws, preservation and reconstruction will be discussed, but also the continuation of elements from the past in reinvented traditions and new music, and topics dealing with archiving and the conservation and use of recordings and fieldwork materials.
The deadline for submission of abstracts has passed, but pre-registration is open for anyone wishing to attend the presentations and concerts. For a full programme and for details on pre-registration and hotel booking, please consult the websites of CHIME and the MIM:

The 14th CHIME conference will be a part of the 2009-2010 edition of the cultural festival Europalia, devoted to China (see also the festival website at www.europalia.be). During the five-day CHIME meeting, participants are offered a fascinating programme of Chinese concerts and recitals, ranging from opera to shadow puppetry and marionette theatre, from contemporary music and dance to rural ethnic traditions. The MIM and other venues in Brussels will also host some forty exhibitions, including a major exhibition organized by CHIME and the Chinese Ministry of Culture and partners devoted to Chinese puppetry and folk music (at the Palais des Beaux-Arts, 27 October 2009 to 3 January 2010).
