17 October 2009
3.30 pm – 7.00 pm
Faculty of Music, West Road, Cambridge
Dr Laurence E.R. Picken FBA, a member of the Faculty of Music, Cambridge and an Honorary Fellow of SOAS, was a pioneer of ethnomusicology in the UK. But his was a very individual view of “the science of musicology”, one that reflected both his parallel career as a distinguished scientist, and his interest in the history of music as evidenced by documents, musical instruments, and the spread of cultural ideas. Starting from an interest in 18th century quotations of the music of Bach, he went on to write classic studies of early Chinese music documents, studies of the historical organology of Europe and Asia culminating in his book The folk musical instruments of Turkey, and many publications with his research group on the transmission of Tang Music to Japan, especially Music from the Tang Court. In celebrating the centenary of his birth, we wish to salute his contributions to musicology, and consider what can be learned from his unique vision.
